Black Magic roses in Boston

February is the most romantic month of the year. Thanks to Valentine's Day: TV, Social Media and the press is all buzzing about the most romantic gifts for 2014. As florists in Boston, we go head first into the Super Bowl Sunday of the floral industry. In the next few days, you will be bombarded with ads for jewelry, perfume, teddy bears, lingerie and flowers. Wouldn't it be great if you could surprise your lover with all those things ?

But in 2014, some gifts have more star power than others. You want to send to a gift that ignites your lover's senses. This year take some tips from Femme Fatale / Glamor Girl Dita Von Teeseshowbiz dita von teese liberty 2 resized 600 photo credit: DigitalSpy/ © PA Images / Matt Crossick/EMPICS Entertainment

The self styled fashion icon and living legend offers some great tips for Valentine's Day in 2014. " ROSES: EXPECTED, PERHAPS, BUT NEVER A BAD PLACE TO START," states the burlesque star.

When asked what the best gift she has received ? Von Teese's reply: " The best gifts I’ve ever received are things like love letters, art or any gift that took a little effort. The worst is getting a gift from someone you don’t feel romantic about, or getting flowers that were bought last minute at a grocery store. Order flowers in advance from a creative florist."

We all know that flowers and celebrity go hand in hand. Why not show your partner how much you care with amazing flowers that reflect their star power ? Roses and Orchids are always the best flowers to send for Valentine's Day. If you're in Boston, come and visit the show we put on for Valentine's Day.

The Flowers on the TV Show Kirstie

Recently, actress Kirstie Alley returned to television with an enjoyable sitcom aptly named Kirstie. I have always been a fan of the star and this show does not disappoint. One of my favorite things about the show is the decor, especially the flowers. The arrangement pictured above showcases yellow roses and cymbidium orchids. The flower arrangements are spectacular and appear to be an integral part of this New York City broadway actress' apartment.

The video clip above is the Christmas episode. The set designer does an amazing job of pink poinsettia plants, an over the top Christmas tree, a ginger bread mansion, along with orange roses, green hydrangeas and bowls of Christmas ornaments.

In one episode, super star John Travolta makes a guest appearance. Undeterred from the star power on stage, the set designer fills Kirstie's bedroom with amazing florals such as the mound of indigo hydrangea as seen above.

At Exotic Flowers in Boston we are often in awe of the talents of New York city florists like our friends at Starbright Floral in Manhattan's flower district. Because New York is our big brother, we often send flowers to Manhattan. We are fortunate that the staff at Starbright treats our clients like their own.

Comedienne @SherylUnderwood Tells Guys How to Send Flowers

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Jan 14, 2014

sheryl underwood " Every woman in the room loves flowers, Am I right ladies ?" - Sheryl Underwood

In her recent show 'Herlarious', comic Sheryl Underwood tells men there is a right way and wrong way to send flowers.

In her stand up act, Underwood states, "don't just send the flowers to the house where only I see the flowers. Send them flowers to my job, where the bitch I can't stand sees how I get down!"

This statement resonates. At Exotic Flowers in Boston, we always get feedback from recipients of flowers. Yes, women do love getting flowers at work. Getting flowers at work shows your co-workers that you care. So guys pay attention. Find out her address. If she works in Cambridge, find out which street. Also if you know if she works on the 40th floor of the John Hancock, your florist in Boston needs to know that to ensure a timely flower delivery.

The Flowers at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

When you fill a ballroom with star power like Amy Adams, Diane Keaton, Bono, Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Douglas you must use flowers that honor the stars. My two favorite flowers were chosen for the table centerpieces at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. An accent of cymbidium orchids lends its beauty to the show stopping bouquet of roses. Peach, yellow, and orange roses served as the centerpiece at the awards dinner. With all the black clothing and amber table setting this floral arrangement really popped off the table and illuminated the room.

Miss Golden Girl 2014 is shown carrying a eye popping presentation bouquet of hydrangea and Movie Star roses. It is no coincidence that this LA florist uses the same lime green tissue paper that we use at Exotic Flowers in Boston to really make the flowers 'pop'.

Twilight Breaking Dawn's Wedding Flowers Inspires Boston Florist

Posted by Rick Canale on Wed, Apr 11, 2012

twilight wedding flowers
As a Boston florist, I find inspiration from colleagues, nature, landmarks, Pinterest and even the movies. Recently, I have become a fan of the Twilight Saga. The most recent installment Twilight Breaking Dawn begins with an elaborate wedding scene set outdoors. The fusion of nature, a wedding and beautiful wedding bouquets inspires not only a twilight fan but florists as well.

A cultural revival is taking place in the United States. As a long standing member of The Society of American Florists (SAF), Exotic Flowers in Boston is offering its full support to SAF's latest public relations program.

SAF’s latest public relations program taps into the 1920s cultural revival prompted by Oscar winner “The Artist” and the buzz surrounding the upcoming film adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. From feather-embellished florals to romantic color combinations, the Jazz Age is making its way onto the wedding scene. And it’s the backdrop for SAF’s first VaseOff! Design Challenge.

VaseOff florist challenge

VaseOff! An online series of floral design competitions featuring SAF members, combines the power of social media and the reality competition craze to get consumers and the media talking about flowers.

“We've found that retro era wedding themes have become increasingly popular, and with ‘The Great Gatsby’ being released in December, the potential for even more 1920s-inspired weddings is very likely, so this challenge could be perfect timing, providing inspiration to both florists and vintage-loving brides,” said Jennifer Sparks, SAF’s vice president of marketing. “Plus, the fun theme is sure to grab consumer attention.”

The first challenge is to create a bridal bouquet worthy of Daisy Buchanan in the style and spirit of “The Great Gatsby.” It came from a suggestion by a reader of The Bride's Café: “I would love to see floral designs inspired by classic literature, anything from ‘The Great Gatsby’ to ‘Lord of the Rings’ to Shakespeare!”
