An Update for Our Friends

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Mar 20, 2020

'Dear Exotic Flowers friends and family,

Like many of you, we’re feeling a sense of uncertainty as we navigate our new reality. Life, and business, has changed considerably over the last few weeks and while we are certainly in uncharted territory, we’re choosing to focus on what we can control.

Above all, we remain committed to the safety of our clients and the entire Exotic Flowers family. We also know that flowers play an important role during difficult times. Flowers are a source of comfort and happiness, and a way to express what you can’t quite put into words. For that reason, we want to remain open and accessible to our clients—while ensuring safety for all.

We are closely monitoring all recommendations made by the CDC, as these are updated daily. Below are the adjustments we have made to ensure the well-being of our clients and team.

We will not be delivering to hospitals or nursing homes until further notice.

To adhere to social distancing guidelines, our delivery team will leave gifts at the front door and follow up with an immediate phone call to notify the recipient. We will not ring the doorbell. Please call us at (800) 706-1200 if you have a specific delivery request.

Our goal at Exotic Flowers is to share happiness and hope through flowers, and that now feels more necessary than ever. We will continue to deliver these sentiments as safely as possible. As always, we thank you for your continued support of our company, and we wish health and safety to you and all of your loved ones.'

In Lieu of Flowers Is An Affront To The Living

Posted by Rick Canale on Thu, Oct 17, 2019

Suggesting donations 'in lieu of flowers' for a funeral is an affront to the living. Sending flowers is an expression that helps the living grieve, a fundraiser does not. Better wording; "In addition to flowers, cards or expressions of care, donations can be made to..."

I tweeted this the other day. While it was received quite well, Twitter inevitably finds someone who will disagree.

e.g.,

"Wildly self serving tweet advising others how to deal with loss"

and my reply. My role as a florist has bestowed that responsibility upon me. The 'Emotional Impact of Flowers' studies by Rutgers and Harvard offers proof that flowers given and received help the grieving process. Thank you for your feedback.

Why We Sell Pumpkins and Decorate for Halloween

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Oct 11, 2019

pumpkins boston

For years we have been displaying ghosts, vampires and ghouls for a Halloween display. Over the years, we have found that less clients were purchasing pumpkins. In 2018, we did not sell pumpkins and did not decorate for Halloween. We had been losing hundreds of dollars selling these items.

Halloween 2019 - Pumpkins, goblins and scarecrows are back. Why are selling items that we know we are losing money on?

Last weekend, my family and I bought our pumpkins at a farm in Peabody. My fourteen year old son asked why Exotic Flowers no longer sold pumpkins? I explained that we lose money on them. His response, 'Dad, if you decorate for Halloween and celebrate fall- it shows the community you care about them.'

Talk about a proud parent moment. I must be doing something right. Sometimes, it's not about the money. It can't be. We appreciate our place on the highway and will no longer lose sight of that.

Summer Reading and Geraniums

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Aug 13, 2019

Catching up on reading in the summer is a favorite past time. While on vacation last week, I was reading The Stories of John Cheever. While reading the passage below, I had the good fortune of seeing this geranium beneath our balcony.

geranium

"Why does not everyone who can afford it have a geranium in his window? It is very cheap. Its cheapness is next to nothing if you raise it from seed or from a slip. It is a beauty and a companion. It sweetens the air, rejoices the eye, links you with nature and innocence, and is something to love. And if it cannot love you in return, it cannot hate you, it cannot utter a hateful thing even for your being the case, and living as it does purely to do you good and afford pleasure, how will you be able to neglect it? But pray, if you choose a geranium..." - John Cheever
