May in New England - Poetry by Suzie Canale, Exotic Flowers' Resident Poet

Posted by Rick Canale on Wed, May 02, 2012

May in New England brings our garden’s first treats,
With blooms bursting straight through the chilled earth,
Exciting our green thumbs for plantings to come,
Mother Nature’s Spring hint of rebirth.

As the lilacs arrive in their great dripping splendor,
The bulbed tulips stand high in salute,
Hyacinth erupts with the sweetest of scents,
While the daffodils join in hot pursuit.
lily of the valley in boston resized 600
If the weather holds up and the air is just right,
We might see stems of bleeding hearts,
Mixed in with the lily of valley’s white bells,
A scene fit for the Museum of Fine Arts.

But if low and behold, all our gardens bloom bare,
And we find ourselves heavily in need,
A visit to Sonny and Maries flower shop,
Will solve all Mother’s Day requests indeed!

Great Ideas and Tips for Wedding Attire via Suzie Canale

Chapter 4: The Dress and Other Formal Attire...

"After all there is something about a wedding-gown prettier than in any other

gown in the world." ~Douglas William Jerrold

describe the image

Thespians will agree that the wardrobe chosen for a production's players are as necessary to the success of the play as a well written script.  It is said that clothing reveals an immediate glimpse inside their likes, dislikes and even their spirit.  Wedding planners have proclaimed for centuries that the design of a ceremony and reception is synonymous with a Shakespearean performance including all of the needed accessories to pull together a well directed stage.  The bridal party's attire is the pinnacle of the design, calling attention to every bead, gather, stitch and taper, representing  the special characteristics unique to couple's relationship.  Coordination, creativity and candid personality are all aspects of choosing a fabulous wedding wardrobe, which if combined correctly, ensures a magnificent show stopper!

The Wedding Dress~ The biggest joy for a bride who is planning her wedding is finding the dress that she will wear for the day which she anticipates will resemble a fairy tale.  Amidst the chaos of the months leading up to the ceremony, she will know that it will all be worth it once she slips on her dream gown. This will be the dress that will follow her in picture frames and family albums for years to come, reminding her when she was in fact, the most beautiful woman in the room.   Searching for that dress can be frustrating for some Boston brides and sometimes overwhelming in the beginning.  Trunk shows are one place to start and are just the event to kick of the spirited task of planning a wedding.  Appealing to brides who are looking for different styles other than the styles native to her city, trunk shows are also growing in popularity as a festive event enjoyed by the bride and her bridesmaids as a pre- bachelorette party.  Another way to purchase a wedding gown is to visit the many specialty bridal shops in the Boston area including Vera Wang Boston, Anna Hernandez and Sabella Couture.  For the bride who loves a great deal, David's Bridal offers affordable bridal wear and Filenes launches a one day event of discounted dresses festively named, "The Running of the Brides" where women flood the store (hopefully with at least two companions) to find formal gowns at unbeatable prices.  From layered lace ball gowns to sleek strapless satin, every girl should feel like a princess on her wedding day.

The Bridesmaids~ A common challenge for brides is finding a stylish and complimentary dress style for her bridesmaids. In several cases, a strategic approach is best, since the vast majority of wedding parties come in all shapes, sizes, heights, skin tones and hair colors. Brides should be careful when committing to color schemes and design to ensure her friends are flattered by the fabric as well as properly form fitted in the cut and style. Some brides become disappointed when the season's fad does not replicate a duplicate image on her bridesmaids as seen in a wedding magazine. One rule to follow to evade this problem is to remember that the wider range of body types, the simpler the dress style should be in design.  What if your best friend just had her first baby and hasn’t shed those pesky last pregnancy pounds? It’s probably not the wisest or kindest idea to force that purple spandex number on her that you’ve been eyeing in the boutique. Sticking to basic hem lines, elegant solid colors (black and navy blue cocktail dresses are both becoming and useful for future events), and forgetting the hip hugging waist bands are sure to keep your buddies in good spirits and more than happy to place the spotlight on you during your big day!

Groomsmen Attire~ The groomsmen are in luck when it comes to selecting their attire since couples have the option of going either formal, fun or both!  This section of the bridal party can easily carry a humorous theme (for example, wearing ski boots instead of shoes at a winter wedding) or classically coordinate with the bridesmaids by wearing matching colors within their ties, boutonnières and socks.  Either tuxedos or suits are perfectly acceptable choices as well as unique accessories (perhaps sunglasses for outside ordeals).  Planners can also get creative choosing suit materials based on color palettes, season and even location!  Linen, ecru suits are the perfect wardrobe match for beach bound weddings where as white tuxedos make quite a statement on cruise ships.  In most cases, groomsmen are dying to get a giggle from the audience which can often set an enjoyable mood for your guests so allow a little freedom when brainstorming for ideas!

Memories from Fenway Park from your Boston Florist #Fenway100

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Apr 17, 2012

fenway 1912
On Friday April, 20th 2012 - Fenway Park will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Hosting the New York Yankees at 305pm, the Red Sox have invited more than 200 former coaches and players to attend this celebrated game. I will be at the game and I am honored to have made the Red Sox guest list. Thank you Red Sox. Welch's Juices have even sponsored over 37,000 drinks so that Fenway Park will host the largest toast ever in the Guinness Book of World Records.
I have some great memories of Fenway Park from hanging around the park collecting autographs and meeting players to collecting my change so that I would have enough to buy a ticket. I even remember once checking the pay phones inside the Sheraton Hotel in Boston in 1985, my friend and I were about 80 cents short. The ticket agent who was in the now defunct ticket station in Fenway Park let us pass. We sat in the mist and rain with about 8000 others fans as the Red Sox played the Mariners. I remember many of those games when it seemed you could count the fans in the park.

I was born in 1970 and I can remember the Red Sox always on the radio, television and being talked about at the earliest age. My earliest clear memory of the Red Sox came in the 1975 World Series when rookie centerfielder Fred Lynn crashed into the wall.
My first game was a doubleheader in 1978 against the White Sox. I immediately became a White Sox hater but my allegiance changed to them when Carlton Fisk changed his Sox in 1981.
Serving as the Official Red Sox Florist from 2007-2010 was quite an honor, but nothing like my memories from Fenway Park.
oil can boyd resized 600
My coolest memory of Fenway Park came on July 24, 1985. My friend and I were outside Fenway Park collecting autographs. Oakland Athletics outfielders Dwayne Murphy and Mike Davis arrived via taxi. They signed our autographs. We then asked Davis who was having a great year if he was going to hit his 17th homerun that night. He responded with 'I am going to hit number 17 and 18 Off the Can (Dennis Oil Can Boyd,).' We were thrilled with his response and pressed him for more information. He retreated and only promised one homerun. Lo and behold, he hit number 17 off Boyd in the 9th inning. What a memory.
I recall my sons' first games on September 26, 2007 and July 4, 2011 like they were yesterday. Fenway Park is all about memories. What are some of your favorites?
The Baseball Hall of Fame (yes, I am a member) is celebrating Fenway's 100th with its Fen-tennial. check out the video here.

Patriots' Day in Massachusetts from Boston to the Berkshires

Posted by Rick Canale on Mon, Apr 16, 2012

patriots day resized 600
As I keep going back and forth and with my colleagues today as why Massachusetts is celebrating a holiday, I felt inclined to explain a thing or two about Patriots' Day.
Patriots' Day is celebrated on the third Monday of every April in Massachusetts. The holiday commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord of the American Revolution. Reenactments take place every year at Lexington Green. Even re-enactors of Paul Revere and William Dawes will make their historic rides all the while chanting 'The British are Coming,'. The Boston Marathon is also run on Patriot's Day every year, but it is not the reason for the holiday.

Every year the Red Sox schedule a game at Fenway Park at 11am start so that the end of the game will coincide with the runners passing at nearby Kenmore Square. The Patriot's Day game is a great Fenway tradition and a ticket to this game is almost as coveted as one to Opening Day.

Twilight Breaking Dawn's Wedding Flowers Inspires Boston Florist

Posted by Rick Canale on Wed, Apr 11, 2012

As a Boston florist, I find inspiration from colleagues, nature, landmarks, Pinterest and even the movies. Recently, I have become a fan of the Twilight Saga. The most recent installment Twilight Breaking Dawn begins with an elaborate wedding scene set outdoors. The fusion of nature, a wedding and beautiful wedding bouquets inspires not only a twilight fan but florists as well.

A cultural revival is taking place in the United States. As a long standing member of The Society of American Florists (SAF), Exotic Flowers in Boston is offering its full support to SAF's latest public relations program.

SAF’s latest public relations program taps into the 1920s cultural revival prompted by Oscar winner “The Artist” and the buzz surrounding the upcoming film adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. From feather-embellished florals to romantic color combinations, the Jazz Age is making its way onto the wedding scene. And it’s the backdrop for SAF’s first VaseOff! Design Challenge.

VaseOff florist challenge

VaseOff! An online series of floral design competitions featuring SAF members, combines the power of social media and the reality competition craze to get consumers and the media talking about flowers.

“We've found that retro era wedding themes have become increasingly popular, and with ‘The Great Gatsby’ being released in December, the potential for even more 1920s-inspired weddings is very likely, so this challenge could be perfect timing, providing inspiration to both florists and vintage-loving brides,” said Jennifer Sparks, SAF’s vice president of marketing. “Plus, the fun theme is sure to grab consumer attention.”

The first challenge is to create a bridal bouquet worthy of Daisy Buchanan in the style and spirit of “The Great Gatsby.” It came from a suggestion by a reader of The Bride's Café: “I would love to see floral designs inspired by classic literature, anything from ‘The Great Gatsby’ to ‘Lord of the Rings’ to Shakespeare!”

Why Boston Florists Should Visit Their Vendors

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Mar 27, 2012

floral supplies in boston resized 600
I know the first reaction from my colleagues is 'why don't my vendors visit me,?' And of course you are right. Your vendors should be visiting your flower shop often. As florists in Boston and throughout the world know, we work our asses off. Time in our shop is often way too long and when we get out, we look to spread our wings socially and with our families.
As the old saying goes, in order to grow your business - you need to work on it as well as in it. As a Boston florist, we are blessed to have access to the Boston Flower Exchange on Albany Street in Boston. Only five miles away, we often take the Flower Exchange for granted because of its proximity. Florists from all over New England flock to the exchange every day to procure orchids, herbs, roses, tulips and thousands of other magical flora and fauna.
At Exotic Flowers, we have drivers in the Boston Flower Exchange every day picking up product. Often times, we are so busy in our flower shop that our buyers, designers and management rarely get to visit the Exchange. We have been dealing with many of our vendors for decades and they have become personal shoppers for us.
floral supply boston resized 600
Recently I was invited to stop by Jacobson Floral Supply and visit with COO Nick Fronduto. Nick and I not only have a common interest in business, but getting to meet face to face has showed us how similar we are as baseball fans, history buffs, Italians and fathers. My visit to Jacobson's left me inspired and refreshed. I was able to meet many of the phone faces as well as touch base with the reps I do know. I came away with new product ideas, met a legend in Buddy Jacobson and got a behind the scenes tour.
As a florist, we are in the business of relationships. Exotic Flowers has a responsibility to our vendors to show an interest in their products. Vendors are our business partners. A strong vendor merchant relationship will benefit both parties.
Next time you visit the Boston Flower Exchange, stop into Jacobson's and tell them Rick Canale at Exotic Flowers in Boston told you to get a tour.

Popular Wedding Themes by Boston Author Suzie Canale

Chapter 3: Popular Wedding Themes...

“Celebrate we will,

Because life is short but sweet for certain” ~ Dave Matthews

Bean Town brides are in luck if pondering the notion of throwing a themed wedding extravaganza since this city if bursting with creative and entertaining possibilities!  Regardless of the time of year you wish to marry, there is something for everyone when the traditional white wedding just doesn't strike you as exciting.  Every aspect of your planning can reflect a particular motif or style including invitations, clothing and decorations.  By tailoring particular details of your event to you and your mate's personality, couples can create fun and original matrimonial affairs.  Whether you wish to celebrate a particular season, holiday or hobby, there's no telling where a little imagination can take your special day.

 tulip delivery boston

New England Seasonal and Holiday Themed Weddings~ Since Boston is blessed with the stunning beauty of four different seasons, why not use these attributes in your party planning and wedding decor?  Winter lovers might want to amplify the serenity of blanketed snow by using frosted branches within centerpieces and floral displays as well as hanging crystals to mimic the spectrum effects of icicles.  For those looking to manage their budgets, winter foliage takes up ample space when designed in arrangements, creating a full and fragrant piece.   Wreathes also make terrific goodies to gift guests which are both affordable and festive for the Yule season.  Fall flora and fauna fans can decorate with colorful leaves in bouquets and display pumpkins with wheat bales around archways.  Couples can also mull over the idea of throwing a Halloween inspired affair by asking guests to wear costumes!  Not only will this guarantee a fun and jovial atmosphere but will assure pleasant memories for years to come.

Spring farers will have no problem recreating the sweetness of this season if they rely heavily on shades of lavender, baby yellow and blush pink within their formal wear and linens.  Since flowers are the symbol of Spring, don't forget to place stems of sweet peas, ranunculus and Sarah Barnhart peonies in bridal work, corsages and nosegays.  Summer seekers will benefit from throwing beach themed weddings as they are the number #1 party planned ceremony and reception thrown in the United States.  Boston beaches provide sublime sands and coastal views from Gloucester to Cape Cod convenient for both North and South Shore fans.  For simple yet sensational ceremonies, line folding chairs facing the ocean leaving room in the center for an aisle.  Line with small, white votives and use delicate white orchids or beach plum roses for bouquets.  While friends and family are swept away into the tranquil serenity of the Atlantic Ocean, couples will be pleased with this budget considerate, fuss free and most importantly, romantic style of party planning.

 fenway july 4 2011 resized 600

For the Sports Fans~ One of the greatest attributes beholden to many Bostonians is their love for sports.  The Celtics, Patriots and the Red Sox hold a special place in the hearts of New Englanders including many soon-to-be's who would love to include a little "fanfare" in their wedding planning but worry about issues of tastefulness and elegance.  You need not to worry, there are plenty of ways to pay homage to your favorite teams by creating both a fun and polished look for your special day.  For instance, Celtics fans can incorporate the shamrock (a symbol of the Celtics) into invitation layouts, favors and even garnish for individual place settings.  Diehard Patriot followers can implement the football theme by using red, white and blue color palettes for linens and dress attire or even have groomsmen where football helmets along with their tuxedos to tip off a humorous beginning to the festivities.  Red Sox enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Fenway Park rents facilities within the stadium for those who desire to assimilate the nostalgia of  a roaring crowd, the flash of native baseball colors across t- shirts and the sultry smells of franks and sausages sizzling atop stadium grills within their wedding planning.   Clever gifts for guests can include baseballs and baseball caps which make wonderful keepsakes of Green Monster bridal affairs.

Does Floral Designer Preston Bailey Miss the Mark on His Colleague ?

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Mar 20, 2012

Bailey3 resized 600

There is no doubt that floral designer Preston Bailey is a genius at his craft. Bailey has created some of the most stunning floral arrangements and events for his clients. He has elevated his craft to an art. As a Boston florist, I have often sought out Bailey's work for inspiration. Talk about a walking and talking version of Pinterest.

preston web1 resized 600

I also read Preston Bailey's blog. Recently Bailey weighed in his opinion on how vendors should dress when working on an event. As a Boston florist who creates many weddings in New England, we work with many other vendors like photographers, bakers, party planners and musicians. Although our staff is uniformed for event set up, we often bear witness to some sloven colleagues as well. And while I am not upbraiding Bailey for judging his colleague's attire, I am questioning some other glaring view points in his blog post.

In his recent post, Bailey takes us into the audience of a recent wedding that he created and attended. Bailey observes a videographer whose attires upsets him. Bailey writes " I realized with horror that the videographer following her was wearing jeans and Ugg boots! I understand that some cultures are more casual than others, but Ugg boots at a formal wedding ? Come on.

 uggs and jeans resized 600

The very worst part, though, is that when one of my colleagues said something to the videographer about her unprofessional attire, her reply was very rude and she used the F word. If this videographer is reading, you know who you are, and shame on you."

Bailey and his colleague’s heart are in the right place. Unfortunately we have witnessed a drastic culture change where decorum has been cast aside.

I do admire the videographer for telling his colleague where to go. I do not think it was Bailey's colleague’s place to offer any further disruption to the event.

Perhaps a well written note next time would be better received. Or coordinating a team effort before the wedding takes place. After all, if the bride was confident in the vendor, then Bailey should have made an effort to reach out to the vendor before hand. The bride chose Bailey and the videographer with reason. I feel it is unfortunate that Bailey does not mention the videographer's name here. If you can drop an 'F bomb' at a wedding, then can handle a bad blog post.
