Mimosa Flower is a Symbol for International Women's Day

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Mar 04, 2014

mimosa in boston resized 600International Women's Day is celebrated throughout the world every year on March 8th. The Day traces its beginnings to the early 20th century as a result of the socialist movement. The holiday recognizes the social and political struggles that women have faced for centuries. It is also a chance for us all to show women how much we respect them and appreciate them.

The holiday stirs more emotions in some countries than others.  The custom of giving the mimosa flower can be traced back to Italy around 1946. The flowers were intended to be given as a sign of respect and the mimosa's symbolism rivals that of a red rose on Valentine's day.

Mimosa's origin can be traced back to Australia. It arrived in Europe around 1820. The plant is quite invasive and should not be placed too close to other plants. Its blooms are often harvested for cut flowers, honey and oils for perfume. You may recognize the blossom at the premium cosmetic store, L'Occitane en Provence.

Many clients from Russia, Eastern Europe and Italy will often call or email to check on this fleeting flower's availability for March 8th. Mimosa has a lovely scent and Exotic Flowers in Boston will have Mimosa for sale on International Women's Day.

Dr. Seuss and a Love Affair of Flowers

As we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss (March 2nd), florists and gardeners embrace Seuss' inspiration from flowers found right in our own backyards. Pictured above, Gladiator Allium showcase the imaginary worlds that Seuss created.
GOMPHRENA SEUSS FLOWERS resized 600Summer flowers like Gomphrena show the fluffy spheres of color so prevalent in the children's stories.
Craspedia also known as Billy Balls are another flower that one can see inspired Dr Seuss to create such memorable images. CRASPEDIA resized 600
With two young boys in the house, there are many Seuss books in every nook of my house. I am also fortunate to be married to children's book author Suzie Canale. Her book 'The Land of Chocolate Cosmos' has been called 'The Lorax' of our generation.
Dr. Seuss and flowers are such a popular concept that PBS kids has even created an online game known as Dr. Seuss Flower Finder where kids and adults can create their own flowers. Flower Finder Dr Seuss
Dr Seuss has inspired so many creative people in the floral industry that a float in this 2013's Rose Bowl featured the Cat in the Hat.

The Flowers for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi

For more than 3000 years, the Olympic Games have awarded the victors with flowers and garlands to celebrate the athletes' accomplishments. In true Olympics tradition, the winners' bouquets cannot have any thorns or barbs as the flowers are often tossed into the crowd.
For the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, an awards team from nine to thirty three people is present at each event ceremony to celebrate the victors. This team's responsibility is to not only choreograph the medal ceremony, but also to make sure each winner is presented with a Sochi Olympics bouquet.

The Sochi Olympics flower bouquet symbolizes the colors of the host city Sochi. The bright yellow from the solidago symbolizes the healing properties of the wealth of the Krasnodar reegion. Green and white miniature chrysanthemums reflect the meadows and mountains that stretch along the Black Sea. Laurel has always symbolized victory and its presence in the Sochi flowers also harkens to the hospitality and kindness of the people of the Caucasus. The remaining ingredient is eucalyptus. This fragrant ornamental was planted in Sochi to help drain the wetlands.
Olympic flowers are always chosen for their hardiness as well, as they to withstand dehydration and fluctuating temperatures.
The Olympic Games remind us how important flowers are for us as a symbol of energy and victory.

But in 2014, some gifts have more star power than others. You want to send to a gift that ignites your lover's senses. This year take some tips from Femme Fatale / Glamor Girl Dita Von Teeseshowbiz dita von teese liberty 2 resized 600 photo credit: DigitalSpy/ © PA Images / Matt Crossick/EMPICS Entertainment

The self styled fashion icon and living legend offers some great tips for Valentine's Day in 2014. " ROSES: EXPECTED, PERHAPS, BUT NEVER A BAD PLACE TO START," states the burlesque star.

When asked what the best gift she has received ? Von Teese's reply: " The best gifts I’ve ever received are things like love letters, art or any gift that took a little effort. The worst is getting a gift from someone you don’t feel romantic about, or getting flowers that were bought last minute at a grocery store. Order flowers in advance from a creative florist."

We all know that flowers and celebrity go hand in hand. Why not show your partner how much you care with amazing flowers that reflect their star power ? Roses and Orchids are always the best flowers to send for Valentine's Day. If you're in Boston, come and visit the show we put on for Valentine's Day.

Martin Luther King Jr and His Influence on this Boston Florist

Posted by Rick Canale on Mon, Jan 20, 2014

Sometimes times delivering flowers in Boston is a stressful job. Traffic, snow and demanding clients can lead me straight to the Johnnie Walker. A flower delivery in Boston has the power to make or break someone's relationship. As a Boston florist, I am called into sharing so many emotional parts of one's life; funerals, new babies, new loves, weddings. These responsibilities give my career meaning.

On my desk at Exotic Flowers in Boston, I keep a copy of this Martin Luther King Jr. quote.

"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

My dad always said "Never hire anyone who can't sweep the floor,". Yes dad, I get it.
