Charlotte, NC September 3rd thru 6th, 2012:
The Democratic National Committee will convene to nominate Barack Obama as the Democratic candidate as the next President of the United States. Every time a convention convenes like this, we are reminded of our Democratic Presidents and what they did and did not do for our country.
This convention reminds me and the staff at Exotic Flowers in Boston who some of our favorite Democratic Presidents were.
* Andrew Jackson, 1829-1837
andrew jackson resized 600The face of the second most bill in our currency, the $20 bill; Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson was tough as nails. He even fought in duels to the death. Jackson believed in small government and expanded the power of the presidency. Unlike many Presidents in history, Jackson was able to pay off the national debt, the only time in U.S. history this has been accomplished.
* Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR 1933-1945
FDR resized 600
FDR is most well known for getting the U.S. out of the the depression and helping bring peace to a war torn world. His leadership and radio chats brought stability to a world in turmoil.
* Bill Clinton 1993-2001
bill clinton resized 600
Who doesn't love Bill Clinton ? Endearing, friendly and we can empathize with all his indiscretions. Not many people would not liek to have a beer and barbecue with this former President.
* John F. Kennedy, JFK, 1961-1963

Boston area native, civil rights advocate, visionary, tough as nails leader. We long to have another.

Mitt Romney Gives a Shout Out for the Local Florist

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Aug 31, 2012

Mitt Romney Red RoseTampa, FL - August 30th, 2012: at the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney recognized the local florist in his speech accepting the Republican nomination for President.

“Mom and Dad were married 64 years, and if you wondered what their secret was, you could have asked the local florist – because every day Dad gave Mom a rose, which he put on her bedside table . . ." - Mitt Romney

We often hear of romantic gestures of small notes, single flowers and special songs and poems. It is nice that local florists were given recognition on national television.

"Here's the bottom line right left conservative liberal whatever ....On a national stage in front of millions of people on National TV.... THE LOCAL FLORIST WAS PROMOTED... It's amazing what the power of flowers has, as described by Mitt Romney last night.
The message I'm sending is 'SUPPORT LOCAL INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES',." - Hal Conklin

Sad Goodbye to Summer - a Poem by Boston Author Suzie Canale

Posted by Rick Canale on Thu, Aug 30, 2012

As we sadly say goodbye to summer,

And close down our garden gates,

Rest assured, there’s much more soon to come,

A new season of blooms awaits!

 autumn flower delivery in boston

While the rosehips drop to reseed them selves

And the perennials return to slumber,

Make a visit to Exotic Flowers,

Who no florist can out number!

Floral displays of fall rich colors,

With a spectrum of red to gold,

Cabbages, mums and even aster pots

An exquisite site to behold.

 Fall Flowers in Boston

Fill your planters up right to the brim,

And don’t forget to keep in mind,

Pretty soon the leaves will drop from trees,

And the pumpkins aren’t far behind!

Republicans Presidents playing poker

The Republican National Committee will convene to nominate Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate as the next President of the United States. Every time a convention convenes like this, we are reminded of our Republican Presidents and what they did and did not do for our country.
This convention reminds me and the staff at Exotic Flowers in Boston who some of our favorite Republican Presidents were.
  • Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower 1953-1961ike resized 600 peace keeper, international relations stalwart, ended the Korean War, created the Interstate Highway system, balanced the budget, maintained prosperity, drank gin and tonics, avid golfer and baseball fan and he even made his own bbq sauce.
  • Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt 1901-1909teddy roosevelt resized 600Trust buster, conservationist, man of character. Refused to let his infirmaties control his life. Even had the 'Teddy Bear' named after him.
  • Ronald Reagan 1981-1989:
president reagan' Rawhide', 'Dutch' call him what you want. Reagan has been canonized and vilified. What remains is that he is still spoken highly of by many. He ended the cold war, restored our military and gave America back its pride.
 * Abraham Lincoln 1861-1865: 220px Abraham Lincoln November 1863 resized 600
 Perhaps the greatest President in the history of the United States. We are a better nation having been influenced by his leadership.

" If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

  3. ROENICK resized 600 Former San Jose Shark Jeremy Roenick, this future NHL Hall of Famer is a graduate of Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass. Some might argue that argue Roenick did not gain much success in San Jose. But you cannot argue with his ten game winning goals in the short time he played there. Besides, Roenick has always been great to kids and fans and earned a top shark award.

Pretty Petals... By Suzie Canale (Choosing Your Wedding Flowers)

Boston Wedding Flowers

Chapter 7: Pretty Petals...

"If I had a flower for every time I thought of you, I could walk in my garden forever."

~Alfred Lord Tennyson

One of the most beautiful aspects of wedding planning is the selection of flowers which include a mass spectrum of possibilities including color palettes, texture and style.  Traditionally, brides were once confined to a "white only" restriction, limiting the wiggle room for brides to let down their hair when it came to bouquets and centerpiece design.  Although white weddings are still unquestionably stunning and still desired by those taken with blooms of white hydrangea, Casablanca lilies and Bianca roses, new trends have allowed bridal floral work to expand outside of this circle.  Including seasonal and thematic options, flowers can now be tailored to fit whatever fun and fantastical party planning couples have in mind.  For those who like to walk on the "rose petaled edge", try these fabulous floras on for size!

Seasonal Stems~ Tulips are certainly in full bloom during the spring wedding season which are both easy to find and affordable for a budget conscience couple.    Providing both soft and vibrant colored varieties as well as textures of ruffled edges and multi-layered heads (such as the Parrot tulip), this bloom is perfect when mixed or standing alone in bubble bowls.  Summer soirees are blessed with a pinwheel of hydrangea choices including antique, popcorn or sea hydrangea which thrives gloriously off of the salty air provided by the coasts of New England.  Boston gardens are also in full swing during this time growing a multitude of perennial and annual goodies lovely for hand held bouquets.    Some of the recommended flowers are tea roses, nasturtiums, campanula, geraniums, calla lilies and lady's mantle.  Fall is another gifted season for flora and fauna giving way to hearty stems of mums, kale and cymbidiums, deeming this the favorite month for bridal centerpiece design by many florists.  Last but not least is the winter collection, composed of interesting branches which can be arched into contemporary architecturally inspired forms.  Other ideal picks suitable for this chilly season are amaryllis (red, peach, burgundy, green and white) hypericum berries and gerbera daisies which are available year round.

Themed~ Several soon-to-be's believe that themed weddings are confined to room decor, favors and clothing apparel which is simply not true.  Selecting a motif for your special day can carry right over to your floral planning including both centerpieces and bridal bouquets.  Perhaps the couple are fond of birds and would like to incorporate peacock feathers within arrangements?  How about those who adore animals and would like to choose flowers with names such as elephant paws, lambs ear, Beebalm, or Tiger lilies?  Another theme which holds incredible popularity is the "Tropical" wedding which can include exotic flowers such as the birds of paradise or showy ginger heads.   Orchid lovers have a wide array of delicate species to opt for such as james story, oncidium, and philanopsis, a fabulous way to put some "cha cha" into your arrangements and hand held bouquets.  Exotic Flowers in Boston specializes in this particular area of majestic blooms.
