The Artistry of Makeup for Boston Brides by Suzie Canale

Posted by Rick Canale on Wed, Jan 18, 2012

Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day. Sorry guys, all eyes are on the bride. The most discerning guests notice every item from how the bride wears her pearls to how her flowers are held.  Want to be a head turning bride ? The presentation of the bride is not only one of the most important elements of your wedding but also the most fun. Once the bride chooses her dress, shoes, flowers and bling; it is time to plan your cosmetic design.

Some Boston brides prefer to hire a professional makeup artist. Many other brides choose a friend and family member .  All you need is the proper guide to application and color contrast.  Keeping the makeup in house is a great way to save money on your wedding.

Color tones in foundation, blush, lipstick and eye shadow that reflect the hues present in either the dress or wedding décor is a common mistake.  Colors should always reflect a bride's natural complexion. Brides often make the mistake of wanting to look tan and come out orange.  The worst thing you can do is look at your wedding album in twenty years and have your children ask why you look like an orange crayon.

Blush should be a shade darker than the chosen base then applied underneath the cheekbones.  Once you’ve found the proper shade, then the bride can narrow down her lipstick by either sticking to deeper, more romantic shades ( mahogany brown, maroon or sultry red) or lighter shades expelling a soft bridal effervescence ( honey, peach or delicate pink).  Eye shadow should also reflect the particular lighting of the bride's eyes to ensure a dramatic statement.  Blue eyes SHOULD NOT be glazed in shadows of blues.  This washes out the natural beauty of her eyes and delivers no “pop” appeal.  If you have brown eyes blue eye shadow sets off a sexy composition, finishing them off with black mascara and liner.  Green eyed or hazel eyed beauties should enhance their assets with shadows of gold, using either black or brown finishing products to complete this earthy and exotic fashion.

Less is almost always more in this area of bridal etiquette so let the natural beauty in you glow.  Every bride has an inherent shine that comes from within making this an area where most need very little help from bottles and tubes of artificial enhancement.  Keep it simple and let your inherent loveliness and charmed smile do the radiating of glamour.

Exotic Flowers in Boston's Favorite Orchids

Posted by Rick Canale on Mon, Jan 09, 2012

My Boston home is always filled with orchids. Orchid plants, cut orchids, phaelenopsis, dendrobiums, cymbidiums. My wife Suzie and I cannot get enough orchids. Cut orchids last for weeks while orchid plants last for months. Like any plant purchase in Boston, do not waste your money on an orchid plant from Ikea, Home Depot, Lowe's, Target or Roche Brothers. Leave it to the experts. The staff at Exotic Flowers in Boston knows orchid plants. We're experts.

The cattleya orchid: what's old is new again. I often hear stories from my parents how cattleya orchids were used almost daily decades ago. Watch the Godfather and you will see them in the funeral tributes at Don Corleone's funeral.

The Vanda orchid is my favorite. The plump blossoms protruding from a mass of dangling roots make this plant an orchid lovers dream.

LADY SLIPPER ORCHID resized 600The Lady Slipper orchid is prized for high end wedding work. The  Paphiopedilum is one of my wife Suzie's favorites.

Best of Floral Management’s Hands OnIf you think Sales Wake-Up is the only place where SAF members can get innovative ideas for increasing sales, then you likely are not reading the monthly Hands On column in SAF’s Floral Management magazine. It’s a treasure trove of best practices, management tips and, yes, sales ideas. As we bid 2011 farewell and get ready to ring in another year of Sales Wake-Ups, we want to pay tribute to you, our loyal readers, by gifting you with our top five sales-boosting stories from Hands On:

with these practical changes, culled from a review of New Year’s
resolutions for florists and small retailers.
Invest a higher percentage of your marketing budget in
packaging. One year ago, florist Rick Canale resolved to shift
Yellow Pages ad dollars into monogramed bags and cellophane,
as well as interior and exterior signage for Boston-based Exotic
Flowers. The exterior signage, in development now to replace
two illuminated “relics,” “will pay for itself the first year,” he said.
    “The new signs are grabbers.”
Canale also updated the staff uniforms: “The polished look
has made a huge difference in the psyche and approach of staff
when we all dress in the same color” (maroon), he said. Even
seasonal personnel will sport matching, logoed jackets for
    Valentine’s Day deliveries.

North Korean Leader Kim-Jong Il's Funeral Creates Flower Shortage

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Dec 30, 2011

kim jong il flowers for funeral resized 600
Dandong, China is a city of 2.5 million people located in the northeast corner of China. Dandong is the main portal of trade to North Korea. Flower sales in Dandong exploded as mourners purchased yellow and white flowers and headed to the North Korean consulate to show their respect to the fallen North Korean leader. A florist named Sun in Dandong claimed he had been selling tens of thousands of yellow and white flowers to Chinese and North Korean mourners.
yellow and white korean funeral flowers resized 600
South Korean news reported that thousands of chrysanthemums (the traditional Korean flower of mourning) had to be brought in from Shanghai to meet demand.
This outpouring of affection for Kim Jong-Il reinforces the importance of flowers to help the grieving process. Although western media depicts Kim Jong-Il as a despot, it is clear that his life had a profound impact on citizens throughout Asia.
kim jong il funeral flowers resized 600
Kim Jong-Il's body was laid out in a resplendid garden of flowers and his hearse was covered in a blanket of chrysanthemums. The importance of flowers at a funeral cannot be overlooked just because Kim Jong-Il was a dictator. What should be noted that millions of people in North Korea are mourning his loss and they are finding solace in fresh flowers.
So when you read 'In Lieu of Flowers' for a Boston funeral, think twice. Millions of impoverished North Koreans know that flowers help ease the pain.

How to Make Your Boston Wedding a Winter Wonderland - by Suzie Canale

Posted by Rick Canale on Wed, Dec 28, 2011

    JANUARY WEDDING FLOWERS resized 600
Sometimes the snow storms of New England are a burden for all of us. But for Boston brides snow can be a blessing in disguise. Snow covered trees and fields lend their inspiration to New England's premier wedding planners and Boston brides as well. While pine boughs and candles can enchant any winter wedding reception or ceremony, December and January offer a bride so much more.
On the endless list of wedding do's lies the favor. Brides and grooms want to avoid the done to death photo or tasteless trinket. Instead of going overboard or overbudget, how about a Christmas ornament engraved with the wedding date along with the bride and groom's initials. Let the season inspire you. These Christmas ornaments could be snowflakes, wreaths or even hearts. The goal is to create a magical momento.
    WINTER WEDDING FLOWERS resized 600
Don't just stop at wedding flowers, decorations or favors. Don't forget transportation. How about arriving at the church in a 'horse drawn open sleigh' ? Is there anything more romantic than a winter sleigh ride ? You could position these carriages outside the church to bring the wedding party to the reception.
Don't let New England get you down. Use the winter wonderland to your advantage. Embrace the beauty of the snow and incorporate them into your wedding.

Dressing Your Boston Wedding Party for Christmas by Suzie Canale

Posted by Rick Canale on Sat, Dec 17, 2011

    boston christmas wreath resized 600

Christmas themed weddings on the Cape, in Boston or in Newport are all enhanced with the back drop of Christmas. There are so many ways to put the jingle in your jolly for your winter wedding in Boston. Drapes of pine roping, shimmering candles, Christmas ornament wedding favors along with a decorated Christmas tree can transform your Noel nuptial into a Boston Christmas extravaganza. Winter themed weddings are surprisingly economical and easy to design. If you really want to take the next step into North Pole Blowout bash, then recruit your wedding party to assist. Here's how to get started...

cape cod christmas wedding resized 600

Brides cherish choosing their ring bearers and flower girls. Dressing them up, coaching them down the aisle and prompting them to show their tiny white teeth all add to the excitement of your Cape Cod wedding.  Let's face it, these cherubs are one of the highlights of any wedding. Why not dress them to suit the season ? Instead of traditional mini tuxedoes and small angel white dresses, opt for an elf suit. Think about the children in the movie The Santa Clause.  If you do not want to go extreme, how about handing out Santa hats to all the children in attendance ?   Not only will you ignite a wonderful holiday magic for guests but create an exciting and entertaining role for all children and want to be children who are  involved.

    boxwood trees resized 600

The bridesmaids and groomsmen can also adjust their wardrobes. Bridesmaids can opt for a sleeky red dress and groomsmen can wear a green bow tie. Boutonnieres made of holly and mistletoe hanging from the dance floor chandelier can only enhance the event. These natural Christmas decorations can of course be provided by Exotic Flowers in Boston.  Shoes can even be altered and the bridal party can show off their dancing feet in elf structured shoes. If your bridal party is really animated, have them wear Santa hats. Sure to bring  giggles and smiles as your bridal party strolls down the aisle, you will have your entire ceremony engrossed in the magic of the season.
