Exotic Flowers Top Five Pizzerias in Boston

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Oct 07, 2011

Boston Pizza
At Exotic Flowers in Boston, we often work on our feet. Lunch is usually eaten at a work station and the end result is often fast food. Unfortunately, you might say we are fast food critics. On our Boston flower design benches, you might find a beef lo mein from Seven Star Street Bistro, or a Chipotle Burrito. Pizza has become a staple for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Some are good. Some are great. Here are our five favorites.
Pizzerina Regina
  • In West Roxbury, Tony's Pizza is an institution. Elio has been hand making one of the best Chicken Parmigiana subs and some of the tastiest area pizza for more than twenty years.
  • Also in West Roxbury is Comella's; Comella's is a family owned chain which is know for its Italian Mess (a delight of mixed pastas, sauce and cheese) but its pizza $5 large cheese pizzas keep me as regular. This is the best $5 you can spend in Boston.
  • A traditional favorite remains local icon Papa Gino's. For chain pizza, Papa Gino's nails it with its rustic pizza. This thin stretched crust cut into mini squares and odd shapes is as close to authentic as a chain can get.
Batting it out for the top two spots are everyone's favorite pizzerias. Both institutions have even expanded with huge pizzerias during the recession.
Pizzeria Regina and Santarpio's are everyone's favorites. But keep in mind, Pizzeria Reginas is good in any of its location, but the north end location remains the best of the chain. From its large slices oozing with cheese on a fluffy crust, Pizzeria Regina never disappaoints but still our #1 pizzeria remains Santarpio's in East Boston.
Santarpio's Pizza remains the best there is. No one comes close and it never disappoints. I continue to ask why no one can replicate this pizza.

Have You Ever Seen Exotic Flowers in Boston in Action ?

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Oct 04, 2011

Fall Flowers in BostonIf you have been to Exotic Flowers in Boston on Mother's Day or Valentine's Day, you have seen the action, the crowds and only half the fun. Exotic Flowers occupies a corner lot at American Legion Highway and Canterbury Street in Roslindale. Our flower shop has been in this location for over seventy five years.

When a client arrives and says that he has never been to our flower shop before, we are thrilled. A sales rep will immediately ask if you would like to see more of the under belly of Exotic Flowers in Boston. At the front of the store, a client will often find a wall of teddy bears along with a collection of artificial flowers designed for the cemeteries which surround our flower shop. Exotic Flowers is near St Michael's cemetery, Forest Hills cemetery, Mount Calvary, New Calvary, Mount Hope and Oak Lawn cemeteries. The front of the store also features Godiva Chocolates, greeting cards, balloons, dish gardens, bonsai trees, orchids and house plants.

Boston FloristAs you travel deeper into our store, you will see a bank of cubicles where telephone sales are completed. We like action and enjoy the buzz and energy that ringing telephones create in a store. Sorry, there is no tranquility here. We are more akin to a busy restaurant. Behind our telecommunications sales outpost is our open floral design area. Clients are welcome to watch Boston's Premier Florists in action; kind of like an open kitchen. On the opposite side of floral design is a ten door floral display cooler loaded with more than forty floral arrangements, dozens of seasonal bouquets and more than 10,000 roses.

As you drop even deeper into the store, a fruit and gourmet room is in the rear. In this room Exotic Flowers creates hundreds of fruit, gourmet and junk food baskets that we deliver to Boston, Cambridge and the entire 617 and 781 area codes.

Take a left at our fruit/gourmet room and you head into an authentic glass topped greenhouse. This greenhouse also operates as a walk in refrigerator during Valentine's Day. After walking out the back door, you will see our growing greenhouse. During the fall, Exotic Flowers grows poinsettias. During the summer, we grow hardy mums. During the winter, the experienced growers at Exotic Flowers design mixed annual hanging baskets which beautify the streets, porches, gardens and backyards of Boston.

Dorchester FlowersAs you make a loop around the rear of the greenhouses, you will land in the middle of our garden center. In December, you will be surrounded by evergreen wreaths, kissing balls and Christmas trees. During the spring and summer, more than three hundred hanging baskets are overhead. You will also notice two houses in the property. People do live in both houses. What could be better than living in a gated garden paradise ?

so next time to you stop at Exotic Flowers, ask us for a tour. You are a guest and we are at your disposal.

Exotic Flowers in Boston - We Do It Fresh - Lessons in Flower Care

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Sep 30, 2011

Fresh Flowers in Boston
In the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed the latest Direct Mail postcard from Exotic Flowers. About every two to three months, a colorful postcard goes to all our Boston and nationwide flower buyers. This month's postcard touts Exotic Flowers' expertise in sending fresh flowers.
Having been in the floral industry for over seventy five years, Exotic Flowers is schooled in the fundamentals of flower care.
Cut flower processing is required as a staff member at Exotic Flowers. The flower processing team at Exotic Flowers has more than one hundred years experience in fresh flower care. We do it fresh is not just an act, it is the backbone of our success.
Bridal Flowers in Boston
Our floral arrangements are designed to last 5-10 days. Every one of our flower arrangements in the Boston area is delivered in the Exotic Flowers' floral preservative. This preservative is designed to promote longevity and maximum blooming show. The floral preservative has both a bacteria fighter and food to help our flowers flourish. Our arrangements also arrive with a care tag explaining that fresh water should be added daily to ensure maximum vase life.
Our flower buckets also have floral preservative; different than the solution in your arrangement. Our Roslindale refrigerators hold flowers at 40 degrees and the floral solution in the buckets is designed to hold and hydrate the flowers until they are ready to grace the tables and offices of Dorchester, Cambridge, Boston and West Roxbury.
dead flowers Boston resized 600Unfortunately, some other florists in Boston do not see the importance of flower care. These dead roses to my left are only 4 days old. The same roses at Exotic Flowers in Boston flourish for seven days.
Exotic Flowers fresh flower care tips:
  • as soon as you receive your flower arrangement from Exotic Flowers, immediately check the water level. Check container daily to insure it is always filled.
  • Do Not Change the water. Exotic Flowers in Boston has already added a floral preservative which not only fights bacteria, but also nourishes your flowers to promote longevity.
  • Display your arrangement in a cool location, out of direct sunlight.

Exotic Flowers Presents Guest Blogger Jon Bornstein of Newton

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Sep 27, 2011

Rosh Hashanah Flowers Newton
I have known Jonathan Bornstein since I was twelve years old. We attended The Roxbury Latin School together from 1982-1989.

Jonathan, like myself, is an advocate of patronizing small business. Jon is also a big Red Sox fan and truly enjoys a good meal. Jon also writes a fabulous blog, ' Enjoy Every Sandwich,'. His musings on great eats have lead me to invite him to guest blog for Exotic Flowers.

Jon will share his views on food, sports, family and his Jewish background. Today he shares a post on the Jewish New Year - Rosh Hashanah.

*   *   *   *   *   *

Rosh Hashanah. Translated for you hebraically-challenged types or even you members of the tribe who zoned out during hebrew school or the Rabbi’s sermons, it means “The Head of The Year”,. The Jewish New year is considered by some to be the birthday of creation, by others the celebration of the birth of mankind, but whatever your interpretation, everyone agrees that it is the beginning of the new year on the jewish calendar. It is a time of year to step out of the regular hectic flow of our daily lives and simultaneously appreciate the blessings that we have while reflecting on who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re headed.

Rosh Hashanah Flowers Sharon

Positioned as such, that makes the holiday part New Year celebration and part Thanksgiving gathering. And what, you may ask, could be more appropriate during a time of reflection and renewal than to share the gift of flowers with our jewish brothers and sisters in the midst of their High Holiday season. The miracle of flowers’ growth and singular beauty is so prevalent that we almost take it for granted, and so just as this time of year serves as a reminder to our jewish brothers and sisters to stop, be thankful and renew our personal resolves to be better parents/children/siblings/friends/people, so can we appropriately and thoughtfully celebrate that process by gifting a symbol of it to our Jewish family and friends with flowers. Shana Tovah, as we say in the tribe – “Good Year”!.

Have You Seen the Life Size Lego Greenhouse ?

Posted by Rick Canale on Fri, Sep 23, 2011

As a man, who loves toys and has two young boys; I have always adored Lego's. I love going to toy stores, toy shows and being knee deep in Lego's at home. In my youth there were no Lego Star Wars sets or Harry Potter Sets; we had blocks of all shapes, colors and sizes. These mixed boxes lead inspired us to build our own sets and dioramas.
Lego remains at the forefront of imagination. Lego appeals to both adults and children. Even Soccer Star David Beckham is an avid Lego fan, endorsing the Lego Taj Mahal.
Recently, London-based designer Sebastian Bergne was commissioned by LEGO UK to construct a public installation for the 2011 London Design Week. The greenhouse stands in the north east piazza of London's covent garden and is functional. The foundation was built entirely from LEGO bricks and is illuminated at night. This Lego Greenhouse will be open to the public until September 25th, 2011.
lego greenhouse 2 resized 600
The Lego Greenhouse features a pitched roof that looks like a suburban glasshouse.
At night it becomes a magical box glowing and lit, coming to life with the plants it contains.

This greenhouse is the world's first living LEGO greenhouse, the framework was built and installed by Duncan Titmarsh, the only LEGO certified professional in the United Kingdom and is home to living plants and vegetables.
lego greenhouse 3 resized 600
See how the soil is made of brown LEGO bricks.
My only hope is that the LEGO Greenhouse will finds its way to Boston.

Exotic Flowers' Advice to Incoming Freshmen at Boston College

Posted by Rick Canale on Tue, Sep 13, 2011

Boston College FloristAs a graduate of Boston College(A&S '93) I would like to welcome the incoming class of 2015 to Boston College.

Fact: the freshmen fifteen is a reality. As a college freshmen, you will have lots of free time and twenty four access to some very unhealthy food. Remember even lite beer is fattening. Walk wherever and whenever you can. Exercise and eat well.

Fact: Long Island Iced Tea may sound refreshing, but it will knock you on your ass. Unless you enjoy throwing up, pass on these drinks when offered.

Get an internship and a job. A job will put much needed extra cash in your pocket and keep you out of trouble. An internship will put you on the fast track for your career.

Schedule yourself for morning classes. Do not get into the trap of taking classes at 3pm. If you take morning classes, you will be done with class when your classmates are waking up.

Winning the Customer

If you can get into the class, sign up for my pal Lou Imbriano's class. Lou will not only teach you about marketing, but about life too. His new book Winning the Customer is a must read.

Finally, you need a florist. You will likely need a florist to say thank you, congratulations, I'm sorry and I love you. Exotic Flowers in Boston will be your florist for life. We even send flowers worldwide if you want to thank your parents for paying for your tuition at one of the nation's greatest colleges; Boston College.

Is Exotic Flowers in Boston a Florist for Change ?

Florist in Boston

Florists for Change ?

A lot of Buzz in the floral industry has been about Florists for Change. Who are they ? Why are they meeting ? Are they game changers ? Are they revolutionary ? Before I present Exotic Flowers in Boston's position, I would like to recap a call I received yesterday from an established flower shop in Manchester, NH.

On the morning of September 7th, 2011 an order appeared on our fax machine (yes people still use a fax machine and not for spam). The order arrived from a high profile flower shop in Manchester, New Hampshire who we have been doing business with for decades.

Usually this NH shop sends orders to Exotic Flowers via FTD and our orders will print on our printers. This order however was a bit different. The usual items were there like flower recipient, Beth Israel Hospital, fresh flowers, card message, sending shop etc.. This order also had a credit card # on it ( I am not going to into the PCI Compliance issue here). The order also stated that Exotic Flowers in Boston give a $60 value but give the NH flower shop a 20% discount.

At Exotic Flowers in Boston, we get this request a lot. Mostly from florists and those who do flowers out of their homes that choose not be in FTD or Teleflora. At Exotic Flowers we are happy to take any credit card order, but do not offer a 20% discount for those who choose not to belong to a wire service. Sorry, just not something we do.

What made yesterday unusual was, the NH shop had been sending us FTD orders for years. When our rep  Shannon Rizza called their shop and explained that a discount was not an option, their sales rep explained that it was something they had just started doing. Their rep in turn got their boss to ask for me and what follows is the conversation:

NH Shop Owner: Is this Rick ? The guy who writes and appears in all the magazines ?

Me: Yes, but you can call me whatever you want. I respond to most anything.

NH: do you know this order will represent more $ in your pocket ?

Me: yes. but we choose not to fill credit card discount orders.

NH: But you would have filled this as an FTD order and lost 30% of the order.

Me: I know, but we do not fill wire orders to make money. We fill them because we send a lot of orders and hope that you will do a nice job on our orders when we send them to you.

NH: so you are not a Florist for Change ?

Me: who said that ? I feel if you were really a florist for change then perhaps I should be getting 90-95% of the order.

The conversation went on and ended with me recommending a shop who I knew could help him.

Which leads me to; is Exotic Flowers a florist for a change ? Of course. We believe the customer service in the industry is fractured. But change begins in your shop first; then at a national level. Exotic Flowers believes in working with FTD, SAF, Teleflora and BloomNet to have a collective set of guidelines for all florists. Start with business ethics, honesty, integrity. If all florists work within the walls of their shop, the rest should take care of itself. FTD and 1800flowers are not going away. Florists who fill those orders are not going away either. My job as a traditional retail florist in Boston is to be the florist for my community.

University Study Links Flowers to Senior Citizens' Well Being

Research Shows Flowers Boost Seniors' Happiness, Memory, Social Networks

BOSTON, MA - Everyday, America's aging population - 40 million and rising - faces the challenges of growing older, including depression, memory loss and social withdrawal. As a concerned nation, we are continually exploring new means to ease daily-life anxieties. Researchers at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, released the results of a six-month behavioral study on the health effects of flowers on senior citizens. The study demonstrates that flowers ease depression, inspire social networking and refresh memory as we age.

"The results are significant because as our nation grows older and life becomes more stressful, we look for easy and natural ways to enhance our lives - and the lives of our aging parents," said Dr. Jeannette Haviland-Jones, lead researcher and director of the Human Development Lab at Rutgers. "Now, one simple answer is right under our noses."

This research follows a study conducted in 2000, which links flowers to greater happiness and life satisfaction in women. In 2001, the Rutgers team set out to explore the effects flowers would have on senior citizens, who experience different living situations and greater life changes.

Prevention in a Bud, Not a Bottle
More than 100 seniors participated in the Rutgers research study, in which some received flowers and others did not. The results shed new light on how nature's support systems help seniors cope with the challenges of aging. The results are as follows:

1. Flowers Decrease Depression. Study participants showed a significant increase in happiness and positive moods when flowers were present.

2. Flowers Refresh Recent Memory. Seniors performed higher on everyday memory tasks and experienced enriched personal memories in the presence of flowers.

3. Flowers Encourage Companionship. Seniors who received flowers re-engaged with members of their communities and enlarged their social contacts to include more neighbors, religious support and even medical personnel.

"Instinct tells us that flowers lift our spirits, but, their effects on seniors are especially profound, if not surprising," said Haviland-Jones.

New Evidence Sprouts Up
Specifically, 81 percent of seniors who participated in the study reported a reduction in depression following the receipt of flowers. Forty percent of seniors reported broadening their social contacts beyond their normal social circle of family and close friends. And, 72 percent of the seniors who received flowers scored very high on memory tests in comparison with seniors who did not receive flowers.

"Happier people live longer, healthier lives and are more open to change," said Haviland-Jones. "Our research shows that a small dose of nature, like flowers, can do a world of wonder for our well-being as we age."

Background
The Flowers & Seniors Study (2001) is the second floral research project conducted by Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., professor of psychology, Project Director, Human Development Lab at Rutgers. Dr. Haviland-Jones is a psychologist and internationally recognized authority in the role of emotional development in human behavior and nonverbal emotional signals and response. In 2000, Haviland-Jones completed the first phase of her research on the emotional impact of flowers on women. The study, known as The Emotional Impact of Flowers, can be viewed at www.aboutflowers.com. The Society of American Florists worked in cooperation with the Rutgers research team, bringing its expertise of flowers to the project.
